Many an adventure has begun by first asking, why? Why do anything? Well, why not? ‘Why’ lays down the gauntlet. It compels you to respond. It invites you to analyse and explore a problem, and come up with a solution. In fact, there’s a whole theory built around ‘why’. More specifically, The 3 Whys, as a way of getting to the real root of a question or problem. So, why start a podcast?

Why not?

After all, podcasts are booming in the UK, with nearly 6 million adults now tuning in each week. But that’s not the reason why we decided to start a podcast.

Why We Chose to Start a Podcast

At Social INK we like to challenge ourselves. And for good reasons. Firstly, it’s motivational. Having a challenge gives you a focus. Something to help channel your energy and creativity. More importantly, a challenge provides you with a S.M.A.R.T. target. A clear KPI against which you can measure success. For example, going live every day for 30 days.

Secondly, setting yourself a challenge is an act of self-improvement. If you only stick to what you do day in, day out, you plateau. You stagnate. Boredom sets in. And no one wants a boring digital marketing agency. But if you mix things up, if you push yourself to do more and try new things, you’ll be all the better for it. Take, for instance, our challenge to write 100 blogs in a month

Not only do you learn by doing and persevering, but you can then use that knowledge, experience, and insight to help others do the same. And that’s something we firmly believe. We won’t suggest any digital marketing approach to clients that we haven’t tried and tested ourselves. Practising what we preach enables us to talk with authority, backed up by data.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, challenges are fun. Some might think our challenges are a bit sadistic at times, but we do enjoy pushing ourselves to be better marketers, to learn new tools, and to provide a stronger service to our clients.

So, why did we choose to start a podcast?

For all the reasons above.

But, why start a podcast in general?

For all the reasons below.

The Benefits of Starting a Podcast

Essentially, a podcast provides people with another medium to consume your content. It’s yet another touchpoint with your audience. An audience that’s increasingly fragmented and distracted by content served up on multiple channels, across various platforms, and accessed via different devices. So, if your audience is fragmented, if you’re competing to be heard above all the noise, your content marketing strategy needs to offer variety. Different people choose to consume content in different ways. When thinking, ‘why start a podcast?’ the answer is clear.

A podcast gives you a different content marketing platform and an alternative, easily accessible and digestible format for your audience to enjoy.

Additionally, a podcast can attract a whole new audience to your business. An audience that you can subsequently funnel from your podcast to your other channels. And most importantly, to your website.

It all works to feed your content marketing efforts, cross-promoting your content and channels, and driving traffic, engagement, and conversions. A podcast gives your company a new platform on which to be discovered. It provides you with another medium to showcase your expertise and knowledge, and provide some level of entertainment. If nothing else, one of the best reasons why to start a podcast is that it humanises your brand.

Like video, audio is a great way to connect with people on a personal level. Because it’s your voice people hear when they tune into your podcast, you instantly become more real. Your business suddenly sounds like a human. You. And that’s very powerful when communicating and building relationships with your audience. For one thing, it makes you more relatable. And if people identify with you, they’re more likely to engage initially, and then keep returning.
