Here’s a list of advertising categories that Facebook, for example, prohibits entirely:

  • Weapons and ammunition 
  • Adult products, services, or content
  • Controversial political or social content

But it doesn’t end there. Facebook also restricts the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Dating services
  • Gambling
  • Online pharmacies
  • Subscription services
  • Financial and insurance products & services
  • Branded content
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Weight loss products

All of the major platforms, including Google Adwords, have a similar list of prohibited and restricted content. 

Social media success without ads isn’t necessarily about reducing overall costs. All marketing, including social media, should be seen as an investment. The purpose of marketing is to grow your business. So the benefits should grow in relation to the cost.
