How to Start a Blog for Free
You’ve decided you want to start a blog. For real this time. Maybe some stats convinced you, or you love reading blogs and know how important they are. Here’s how to start a blog. For free. Step by step.
Research How to Start a Blog for Free
Google “How to start a blog”.
Google “How to start a blog for free”.
Realise you’re probably going to have to rebuild your entire website to make a proper blog work. You want this done right. And you’ve been talking about making a new website anyway, so this means killing two birds with one stone. How hard can it be, right?
Research blog platforms. After looking at Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Ghost, Blogger, Joomla, and other options, you decide on WordPress. (It powers a third of the internet, so it’s a solid choice. Well done!)
Spend a few hours on your new WordPress.com website before realising you should really go for a WordPress ORG website, to get the features you wanted from WordPress in the first place. (Yes, there’s a difference between com and org. Both are WordPress. Confusing, we know.)
Look at hosting options for your new upgraded site, and get convinced to upgrade to “Wordpress friendly” hosting. (Any proper hosting is WordPress friendly.)
Looking Good! Wait, No…
Spend another 5 hours looking for good themes. You figure, getting something that looks good is worth a bit of money. Then, you find one, and you install it. But it looks nothing like the nice demo did! You contact the theme developer in anger and ask for a refund, but they tell you it’s because you have to set it up with the demo content. Huh?
3 hours later. Demo content works. You start customising your website, one Google search at a time, to get things to look right.
Why the *heck* is the logo breaking the menu like that??
How the *heck* do you change the fonts?
You learn all about “widgets”. But nothing in the “widgets” lets you change the sentence in the footer. So you Google that. Turns out you have to code some things. You open one of the PHP files and cross your fingers you aren’t breaking anything.
The site doesn’t look that great with your actual content in it, so you decide to grab some premium stock. You want this to be legit. You even know some PHP now, so you edit the theme code to get the right look and feel.
Find Out What You Didn’t Know
It’s been a week since you decided you want to start a blog for free. After using all your spare time, letting emails pile up, snapping at your well-meaning spouse and delaying marketing activity until your site is “done”, you have it. Your new blog and website.
It’s perfect. Well, it’s OK. It works. You’re proud.
Then you open it up on mobile. Nothing looks right.
There goes your weekend.
Two days later, there’s an update to your theme. You know updates are important for security, so you hit update.
Suddenly, all your hard work to make the theme look like your business is gone. It looks like the generic theme again.
Turns out you didn’t use a Child Theme.
And you haven’t even started blogging yet.
If you’re a small business, starting a blog “for free” costs a lot more than you think. Your time and resources should be used as investments, so you end up with something that doesn’t just “do the job”. Your blog should do the job well, and help your business grow. Focus on your strengths, and delegate the rest.
