We often get asked the question: “Does social media marketing really work?” Businesses and SMEs like to see a tangible return on investment when it comes to their digital marketing. Yet, they find it hard to justify paying someone to run their social media accounts, often struggling to see the benefits of social media for marketing. So we’ve designed an experiment to prove just how valuable social media marketing can be for brands.

Everyone ‘does’ social media on a personal level. But when it comes to using it as a business tool, people are still quite cagey. If you’ve never run a company social media profile or executed a social media marketing strategy, it can be hard to see beyond the memes, LADbible videos and holiday snaps people share on their timelines.

We know social media is an effective marketing channel. And this is how we plan to prove it.

The Setup

At Social INK, we don’t like to suggest digital marketing strategies that we haven’t previously roadtested ourselves. We like to know that an idea or approach works. Because we want our clients to succeed.

Ok, so we can’t guarantee results. There are too many variables involved. But we can tweak, refine and adapt our approach to suit the client’s needs. And we can use case studies to show how it has worked in the past.

So, does social media marketing really work? To find out the answer, we’ve hooked up with a social media community to run a short campaign on one of our channels.

We want to see how impactful social media can be, with the right strategy in place. More importantly, we will be measuring some key metrics to measure our return on investment.

The idea is simple. For one day only, we will run a competition encouraging user-generated content.

And you can see it unfold in real-time, over on our Twitter account.

The Proof

During the day we will track key metrics and analytics data to build a picture of the level of influence and engagement, as well as the impact on traffic and our social reach.

After the dust has settled on our little experiment, we will collate and publish all the data and statistics as a case study: Does social media marketing really work?

We hope to demonstrate how it’s possible to leverage a single event and generate high-quality content marketing material, by doing it ourselves. We’ve devised a social media marketing strategy alongside a long term content marketing strategy to show how businesses and SMEs can effectively use social media as an integral part of their overall digital marketing strategies.
