Choose Carefully and Creatively

One of the first, and most important steps when establishing a social media presence is to choose your platform and your handle.

Your handle is the username that other people will see when you post — while you may still be reliving the horror of your 90s childhood with usernames like PrincessBabyStar or CoolChick1998, it doesn’t have to carry across into your business life.

You should choose a succinct, easy-to-memorise and brand-appropriate username. We recommend that you use a handle that is as close to your business name as possible. However, with over 3 billion social media users, you might have to get creative.

For example, if your business name is Adam’s Armor but you find that that name has already been claimed don’t go down the route of becoming AdamsArmor2018. You could add the name of the town you’re based in, or if you specialise in a specific product then incorporate that into the name. Remember to keep things simple and easy to search.

Once you’re all set-up, craft yourself a clever, clear bio and you’re ready to go!

So, you’re all set up with your shiny, new business profile. Now, what do you do with it?

Using social media for business development is all about expanding your network, building connections and creating a community. Sherpa Marketing’s research discovered that more people follow brands on social media than follow celebrities. On Instagram alone, 80% of people follow at least one business.

And with over 3 billion people using social media regularly, if you don’t embrace social media you’re missing out on a fast, inexpensive and efficient way to reach almost half of the global population.

Social media is a great way to expand your reach. With clever hashtagging and carefully curated, valuable content, you can build an engaged, loyal community.

People want to see the human side to your brand, as a global community we’re fed up of algorithms and impersonal service. To really build trust, loyalty and engagement you need to show that there’s a human behind your brand. People like transparency and they like seeing the story and the people behind your business.

So swerve those sales pitches and instead focus on delivering high-quality content that offers something of value to your customers.

Analysing Analytics

You’ve done it. You’re now posting quality, on-brand content that you’re proud of. You’re building up a loyal following and starting to really gain some visibility for your brand.

How can you boost that further?

Become friends with analytics.

While it is possible to build a community without ever looking at an analytics report, we don’t recommend this approach. Analysing data about your core audience, their browsing habits and the success of your marketing campaigns will help you to really dig down deep into understanding your key audience.
