The other day I was listening to James Altucher’s recent podcast with Jordan B. Peterson. One thing in particular hit home whilst listening to this episode. It was this; “A bad plan is better than no plan at all”.

It hit home because, no matter what I’m doing for work, whether it’s for Social INK or for one of our amazing clients, we always have a plan.

Think of a plan like a recipe. If you wanted to cook dinner for your friends, you would choose a recipe, you know what needs to go into the recipe, and you even have instructions as to how to use those ingredients.

For your social media, it’s the same thing.

What does a plan involve? 

It’s a simple construct for most projects and client content. They need to know what’s happening going forward. We need to be prepared in advance. So for us, the average client plan looks like this spreadsheet.

This type of Google Sheet, which is so simple to create, is incredibly useful. It allows us to prepare in advance, get client sign off and schedule the majority of all content in advance.

Our plans take various different shapes and forms depending on the needs of our clients.

Our entire company is now completely remote, so everything we do is “on the cloud”. It’s online to make sharing and, more importantly, collaborating, as easy as possible.

We use tools like Google Drive, Evernote and Asana to make sure everyone knows what is going on at any given time.

We make sure we keep our clients abreast of the plan; especially for content. We make sure they have access to all the same files so that they can see what’s planned for their business.

So why do you need a plan? 

To make sure you actually get what you need to do, done!

When you decide that you want to run your own social media, and that you want to engage an audience, the first thing you’ll want to do is make an agreement with yourself.

Think of it a little bit like a contract. From now on, I WILL POST TO SOCIAL MEDIA 3 TIMES PER WEEK.

That’s an example. It could be more detailed. For example, I will post to Facebook 3 times a week and I will post on Twitter once a day.

Once you’ve made this contract with yourself, your plan begins, and you can start the next step.

Break it down to make it easier to chew!

Just like my recipe metaphor, think of a big juicy steak. You shouldn’t try to put the whole thing in your mouth in one go. Break it down.

Depending on your plan, create sections, subsections, dated and ready to go. You can use our template to make this easier.

Once you’ve broken this down, you can start to fill in the gaps, in advance, ahead of time.

Suddenly, it’s small, easy-to-chew pieces for you to get done.

You can create the content, piece by piece, then follow your own “contract”, instructions if you will, to get them all scheduled and in place.

Suddenly you have a complete final dish that you can enjoy.
