The Dos and Don’ts of Content Marketing
Content marketing is a huge part of the success – or failure – of any company today. However, many companies are at a loss when it comes to what they really should and shouldn’t do. This leads to some costly mistakes. Fortunately, even if you are making some of those mistakes, it’s not too late to change, and you can start to add more great habits to make your marketing even more effective.
What Should You Do?
First, you need to give the people what they want, and that’s good content. It doesn’t have to be award-winning material, but it should give the readers something to think about or some important information. Even something that simply entertains the readers can work. You need to have high-quality content that features keywords, but it is very important that you put those keywords into the content naturally. You should also think outside of the norm when you are coming up with your content ideas. Consider adding infographics, for example. Adding video is another great option that changes things up but garners more attention to your site. Make sure you measure the success of each of the pieces of content that you put up as well. Analytics will help you to see what topics and types of content get the most traction. This will enable you to rework your marketing and content plan to give the readers more of what they want.
What Should You Avoid?
One of the big things that you want to avoid is overselling. Certainly, people who visit the site already know, or assume, that you have something to sell. You do not have to beat them over the head with it. Provide quality content with solid calls to action that don’t try to sell too much. You don’t want to be a commercial. You want the reader to see you as valuable. When they value you, then they will become a customer. You also don’t want to use content that’s too short. The days of posting a 200-word snippet full of keywords are over. You need to have real content that has a little meat to it. It might not need to be a full meal, but it should be enough to satisfy your readers. One of the other big mistakes of content marketing is not paying attention to the comments on your content. People may have questions, or they may have something to offer. Respond to them. It will encourage more people to leave comments and can help your online community thrive.
