I often have conversations with businesses, small and large, that ask me what is the best way to get online. I thought I would share with you some of the most important tips and strategies that we have implemented for our clients as a company since 2008.
When you are looking at getting online as a business, it often seems like a daunting and VERY expensive experience. The truth is, it’s NOT! Here are 3 things you can do today to start getting your business online.
1. Create a simple website!
This isn’t complicated and it’s not hard to do, believe it or not. You don’t need a Computer Science degree and you don’t need 5 years plus experience. You can get a simple website up and running within a couple of hours using a tool like Squarespace. We recommend this particular tool for 90% of small businesses and here’s why:
i. It’s cheap! Within a few minutes you can setup your site, claim a free domain name through Squarespace and all of this will cost you $96 for your first year. That’s approximately £65.
ii. It’s fast! Once you have signed up, you can simply choose a template that works for your business, and again, with a few clicks you can use the system to start changing the content, imagery and menus very easily.
iii. It’s beautiful! The templates on offer are stunning, easily adaptable for your business and the best part is, your new website is completely responsive, so will look great on tablets and mobiles too.
iv. It’s what you need! When creating your first website, think simplicity. 5 pages to start with is a great idea. You can build your home page, an about us page, a services/product page and a contact page. The best part is, with SquareSpace, you can add a blog or even setup e-commerce capabilities at a later date. (e-commerce capabilities will increase your SquareSpace annual cost to $216 or approximately £144).

2. Create a Facebook Page!
Nowadays you need to be active on social media. It’s one of the MOST important parts of getting your name, your brand, your product out to the market place. Often referred to as “Discovery”, being on social networks allows people to come across your brand, product or service without having to search for it specifically. Facebook has 1.49 billion monthly active users. If you don’t think your audience is present then think again.
Here’s what you should do. Go to Create A Facebook Page. From here you can simply follow the simple steps to creating your own business page. Take your time to carefully and correctly select what kind of business you are. This is a very important part of setting up your page.
You are going to need a profile picture, use your logo as a great way to help people identify with your brand, this will need to be a square image. You will then need a cover photo, this is the long image across the top of your page. We recommend most businesses use an image of either their premises, their products or their services.
Sizes for images on Facebook as below:
Profile Photo - 180px X 180px
Cover Photo - 851px X 315px
From there, fill in as many details as possible, including contact details, opening times of the business, descriptions of what your business does and create a call to action. This is the button that sits over your cover photo saying “Contact Us” or “Sign Up” etc.
Once your page is online, you will want to consider advertising on Facebook. I’m not going to go into detail on this post, but I wrote an article recently about this, 5 Reasons to advertise on Facebook - Starting Today!
3. Be Active Online!
There’s nothing worse than a digital presence that stays stagnant… Think of it like a shop front, ALL shops regularly update their window displays. They move things around, they showcase new products and they push their brand. You need to do the same. Update your Facebook page on a regular basis. Set aside a bit of time, even if it’s just an hour a week, and write 2 or 3 posts every Monday for example which you can then schedule to go out during the rest of the week.
Share links to your website, to your products, to information about your company and talk about your business, share industry specific stories, give your audience a reason to like, follow and engage with your brand.
